You can use either HTML or markdown https://www.dreamwidth.org/support/faqbrowse?faqid=271. Markdown is the default - you have to set it in the headers (the post options linked above) if you want to use HTML.
I'm not sure what else to say. This is bold and this is italic.
Apparently with markdown you can also just use html as well. Here's an

I've been kind of alternating between a single line break and a double line break to see which one works the way I want (a single blank line between paragraphs). This is a single line break
This is a double. That's about all I can think of. Let's see how this looks.
